For the Record: December 4, 2020
Keeping tabs on new recordings of interest to the new-music community, on CD, vinyl LP, cassette, and digital-only formats—including a whole flock of tips for Bandcamp Friday.
For the Record is a weekly round-up of new and pending recordings of interest to the new-music community: contemporary classical music and jazz, electronic and electroacoustic music, and idioms for which no clever genre name has been coined, on CD, vinyl LP, cassette, digital-only formats… you name it.
This list of release dates is culled from press releases, Amazon, Bandcamp, and other internet stores and sources, social-media posts, and online resources such as Discogs. Dates cited typically correspond to initial U.S. release, and are subject to change. (Links to Amazon, used when all else fails, do not imply endorsement.)
After publication, new listings are incorporated into On the Record: The Master List, a continuously compiled and updated resource exclusively accessible to paying Night After Night subscribers, found here.
These listings are not comprehensive—nor could they be! To submit a forthcoming recording for consideration, email information to nightafternight@icloud.com.
It’s Bandcamp Friday, Once Again
The days slip into shadow so quickly now, especially when you’re wrangling day-job labors. But I know from cursory glances at Twitter and Facebook that you’ve all been very busy already on this final Bandcamp Friday of the year that time forgot.
Actually, I spent a bit of time today watching a record-release concert on Bandcamp – my first experience of this new live-streaming service – and was pleasantly surprised that the clean, pleasant architecture was robust enough to sustain the pressure of coinciding with Bandcamp Friday sales.
Quoting what I posted on Twitter, the experience was “like YouTube without bad actors, or Twitch without emoji vomit, or Facebook without self-loathing. I enjoyed seeing numerous friends active in the chat column beside the viewing window, but also appreciated the option to turn it off. And the “merch table” directly under the viewing window was a nice touch, too.
Now, I promised you recommendations in my previous newsletter, and I’m determined to see that through. But while the Bandcamp sale continues until 3am EST, my work day is ending. So… this once, please don’t hate me for indulging in a wee shortcut.
Heh… seem that while I was piling up these tweets, Tim Berne posted still another archival recording by Prezens, this one from 2006. Also, Migration of Silence Into and Out of The Tone World, the encyclopedic new 10-CD document by bassist, composer, bandleader, and community activist William Parker, went up for pre-sale today, ahead of its arrival on January 29.
I could go on and on, but…
For the Record will return in its regular format next Friday, Dec. 11. Until then – and always – thank you for supporting artists.
