For the Record is a weekly column that rounds up details about new and pending recordings of interest to the new-music community – contemporary classical music and jazz, electronic and electroacoustic music, and idioms for which no clever genre name has been coined – on CD, vinyl LP, cassette, digital-only formats… you name it.
This list of release dates is culled from press releases, Amazon, Bandcamp, and other internet stores and sources, social-media posts, and online resources such as Discogs. Dates cited typically correspond to initial U.S. release, and are subject to change. (Links to Amazon, used when all else fails, do not imply endorsement.)

I don’t like making excuses, but over-extension has gotten the best of me this week, so I’m skipping without much preamble straight to the listings—but do be sure to take note of the two new Matthew Shipp albums out today, both solid additions to a recent hot streak. The Cosmic Piano, a solo recital, arrives on Bang on a Can imprint, Cantaloupe Music. On Armageddon Flower, from Whit Dickey’s vital Tao Forms imprint, Shipp’s long-running String Trio with violinist Mat Maneri and bassist William Parker encounters another frequent Shipp-mate, prolific saxophonist Ivo Perelman. The heat that results from Perelman and Maneri rubbing up against one another accounts for armageddon, while the beauty and poise that saturate this chamber-quartet affair deliver the flower. Shipp talks about both albums, plus The André 3000 Imbroglio™ and playing in the Rothko Chapel (second show starting as this hits your inbox), in a new interview published by the Village Voice.
One more nod this week: Sonic Calligraphies I–V, new on the Belgian label Off, answers a question you might not have asked: What would it sound like if you dropped Ken Ueno, a formidable improvising vocalist and composer, into a hyper-resonant steel tank in Colorado, armed only with a megaphone? Specific as that description might sound, what emerges might not remotely resemble what you imagined. This spectral litany is not to be missed.
