Stepping out, slight return.
Correcting a mistake published in yesterday's newsletter: Tim Berne & Friends at Lowlands Bar in Brooklyn on Thursday, Sept. 28.
Please pardon my cluttering your inbox two days in a row. But I published an error in yesterday’s epistle, and I want to set things straight immediately.
In the live event listings included with the newsletter titled “Stepping out,” circulated on Wednesday, Sept. 27, I absentmindedly wrote that Tim Berne – a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader I’ve followed closely since I was a college student in San Antonio during the late 1980s – would be playing the latest installment of a long-running residency at a Brooklyn venue on Thursday, Sept. 28—meaning tonight.
Unfortunately, for no evident reason whatsoever, I listed the wrong venue. A few friends pointed this out instantly, and the error was corrected on the Substack web platform within 30 minutes of its dissemination by email.
But accuracy is important to me, and so is Tim, with whom (full disclosure) I worked very closely during the first few years of his Screwgun record label, prior to my own shift from a seven-year stint in music publicity back to journalism. From 1996 to 1998, I provided Screwgun with publicity and extremely rudimentary web-design services, for a fee—and I still feel obligated to mention it all these years later.
Here’s a taste of a Berne date at Lowlands from earlier this year…
So, out of concern that Night After Night readers who receive the newsletter via email might not see the correction on the website, here’s the amended listing for tonight’s show, which reunites Berne with one of his mightiest longtime comrades:
Tim Berne with Gregg Belisle-Chi, Michael Formanek, and Jeff Davis
Lowlands Bar
543 3rd Ave., Brooklyn
Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8pm; pass-the-hat
instagram.com/berneornotSaxophonist and composer Tim Berne has been in residence at Lowlands practically every Thursday night for months now, so you know his creative juices are flowing in abundance. This week, in addition to regular collaborators Gregg Belisle-Chi on guitar and Jeff Davis on drums, Berne will be welcoming a longtime friend and collaborator, bassist Michael Formanek, so spirits should be especially high.
I can’t be there, unfortunately. But maybe you can?
And, as the saying goes: We apologize for the error.
Doh.
